Circumcision
What it is

Circumcision: what it involves

When the foreskin cannot be pulled back (phimosis), gets trapped behind the glans (paraphimosis) or becomes inflamed again and again (balanitis), circumcision solves the underlying problem.

It is also performed for family, cultural or hygiene reasons. At the evaluation we check whether it is the best option or whether there are alternatives, such as topical treatment in some children.

When is it recommended?

  • Phimosis that prevents retraction
  • Paraphimosis
  • Recurrent balanitis or urinary infections
  • Pain or tearing during erections or intercourse
  • Personal, family or religious choice

The indication is confirmed at your evaluation.

Step by step

How the procedure goes

Evaluation

We review the reason, your general health and current medications. For children, parents are told what to expect at that age.

Anesthesia

Local anesthesia is usually enough for adults; children receive sedation or brief general anesthesia so there is no pain or fear.

Procedure

The foreskin is removed and closed with self-dissolving stitches. It takes about half an hour.

Home the same day

You leave with written instructions, pain medication and a follow-up appointment.

Afterward

Recovery and aftercare

Expect swelling and tenderness for the first few days. Most people return to desk work or school within days; strenuous exercise resumes in about two to three weeks and, for adults, sexual activity around four to six weeks, as advised at follow-up.

You will receive written instructions and a phone number for questions.

FAQ

Before you decide

Is circumcision painful?

Not during surgery, thanks to anesthesia. Afterward there is soreness that common pain relievers control and that eases over the first days.

At what age can it be done?

At any age, from newborns to seniors. What changes is the type of anesthesia and the aftercare.

Can I travel back to the US the same day?

Most adults can ride home the same day as a passenger. Ask when you book so the timing of your procedure and follow-up fits your trip.
